| | Boletus ID - Possibly cep? Found this growing in soil on wasteground today, in misty weather (could explain the wet look, unless it's something like a slippery jack).
I thought it might be a cep, but would like to check.
Could anyone help? Thanks

As a newcomer to the fungi forums you should read the attached: Is my fungus edible or psychotic requests
I would also say that your skills are not up to the job of safely identifying edible fungi. Your misidentification has overlooked important characters which shows you lack the necessary experience to be safe.

I understand people's caution when IDing species, especially ones people might be eating. My message isn't actually an edibility request, though I suspect it is as it certainly isn't one of the few poisonous boletus species.
So my request stands - could anyone help me with an ID, perhaps pointing out those traits I've so foolishly missed in my tentitive ID as a slippery jack or a wet cep?
Would it help if I promised not to put it near my mouth? |

You can do some of the work in identifying this yourself by going back to the descriptions in your books of the options you are considering and looking at characters such as the presence or absence of a ring, whether the cap surface is glutinous in wet weather or not, and whether there is a reticulum on the stem.
