| | | Records Hi,
New to the forum, so wanted to introduce myself, and also to ask about fungi records. I live on the border between sussexes, and am embarking upon what will probably be a lifelong project to identify and record as many as possible of the fungi that grow on the Ashdown Forest.
I wanted to invite anyone living in the area to join me, but also to ask, if (and when) I come across particularly interesting things, How do I find the local recorder so that I can share information?
I'm new to this sort of field mycology, but the more I find, the more I feel I should be recording it!
Thanks in advance,
Iona. |

It sounds like you are the recorder!
You could try here: Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre – County Recorders
There's contact details for a guy named Martin Allison.

Ken | Thanks Ken,
I know, glutton for punishment! But it's a naturally obsessive subject...
I think it'll push me to further my knowledge (There's an understatement!), and learn at a faster pace, ijt's also a brilliant reason to be out exploring new parts of the forest, it's quite an expanse, and I'm terrible for sticking to the trees and ignoring some really interesting heathland habitats, methodically covering as many different areas as possible will be good to get me out of my comfort zone. And goodness knows I've found some pretty wonderful things so far! Think I'll be a regular on the 'fungus of the day' thread...
No doubt I'll be stuck for some IDs too, so I'll be glad to know you lot are here! |

| | | Re: Records You're welcome.
There are a whole raft of fungi folk on here, some new, some middlin and a good few experts too, but help us to help you ID anything you cant by using the advice in the sticky: Help us to help you identify fungi
In short, good pics showing detail of cap, gills and stipe, plus all the habitat, substrate, smell etc etc all help, plus a spore print colour when you can.
Cheers
Ken

Ken | and whatever you do (if you don't want to be idle for most of the year) don't limit yourself to fungi with "caps and gills"
for example if you have some botanical knowledge check out this thread (which I'm gratified to see has proved quite popular) Fungal Plant Parasites
also seek out previous records for the forest - using the FRDBI vice-county search option FRDBI vice-county search, looking at East Sussex and searching for a common species (the blusher) I soon found some Ashdown records: British Fungi - record details
(a job for the winter months methinks) the local reccords centre should be able to put you in touch with other like-minded people
as Del Boy would say - "the world's yer lobster"
have fun
Chris
(Yorkshire mycological recorder) FRDBI vice-county search

| | | Re: Records Hi Iona, and welcome to WAB!
We do have a County Group website: Home - Sussex Fungi Group
We're currently planning a couple of late season forays (I'll keep you up to date via PM if you want) and we were thinking of Ashdown Forest, possibly in the next couple of weeks. We also have a microscopy workshop on the cards if you'd like to go down that route.
Athough I'm not massively familiar with the forest, I know you could keep your eyes peeled for Mitrula paludosa (damp mossy places) and Clitocybe sinopica (exposed heathland fire sites). Both are interesting species and start appearing in early spring.
As I am involved in recording for the county I am keen to help you out (with microscopy or otherwise) with ID's etc and you can send your records to me if you wish (The Sussex group in turn share them with the SxBRC, FRDBI, CATE etc)
If you need to know anything (or maybe wish to meet up at some point ) please drop me a PM.
Cheers,
Nick

| | | Re: Records Please don't be offended, but it is worth mentioning (for anyone intending to submit records to the County Recorder), that it is essential to ensure that only those records of which you are absolutely sure of the identification are submitted.
If in doubt, WAB is probably the best place to start with ID help, but on those occasions where the species can't be properly identified, it would be best not to submit rather than potentially reduce the accuracy of the county record list.

Mike. |

| | | Re: Records Hello Iona,
I'm not quite sure how you are going to ''learn at a faster pace" because the important thing is accuracy and earning respect from fellow mycologists.
The other problem is that the season (with macro fungi) is getting close to it's end for the year - but all this late rain has certainly helped.
Sounds like you have quite a dedicated fungus group in Sussex, so join up ASAP is what I say.
