| | | ID assistance, please Oh dear, I'm off again. Another year, another brown one to identify!
Found these today on Cotswold limestone grassland on the ramparts of the Uley Bury Hill Fort - this area has been cleared of scrub in the last few years and grazed in summer. There weren't many specimens, two or three in one part, another couple a few feet further up the slope.
I can't find many "cap" fungi that appear in early spring - is this Marasmius oreades, please? If not, please can someone enlighten me? Thanks.
Incidentally, I have been unable to get into the "Mushrooms" part of Roger Phillips' website recently - has anyone else had this problem or is it just me? |

| | | Re: ID assistance, please hi...i don't have my mushroom book with me, but these look a bit like magic mushrooms to me, although i don't think they are. the family they belong to is pretty big, so i'll dig out the info for you later on today when i've got my book. how big were these, they look pretty small? they do look like Marasmius oreades but will check! |

| | | Re: ID assistance, please ok...have looked in my hernia inducing encyclopedia and i think (and i stress the think, its a while since i did fungi) that this is either tubaria hiemalis or tubaria furfuracea. you need to have a good look at the shape of the top to be sure but it think its more likely to be t.hiemalis. both are woody species, rather than grass, but if the area was recently cleared it would fit. hope this helps?

| | | Re: ID assistance, please Thanks for that Almostnormal - I never considered Tubaria hiemalis because there wasn't a great big pile of woodchips underneath 'em! But, as the area has been cleared of scrub in the last year or so, of course there could well be chips/shavings/sawdust now hidden beneath the grass, something I wasn't bright enough to think of. I have compared the new photo with one I took late last year of T. (probably) hiemalis on woodchips and they do look remarkably similar... thanks again.
Btw, I can now get into the mushrooms pages of the Roger Phillips' site again, so there must have been some sort of temporary glitch. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
