Fungus are a strange thing in this world. The symbiotic relationship between fungus and trees is well illustrated in the (incredibly excellent) book 'The Secret Life of Trees', where specific fungus in tree roots promote tree growth.
I'm wondering if there's a little more to these strange denizens in our gardens and woodlands. Certainly, in the case of the Deathcap, I read that they're spreading more readily these past two years, even growing in unsheltered areas, so even mushroom evolution marches on...

So far, no rule seems to have been broken, naturally regular WAB members are always going to be suspicious of certain posts and treat them accordingly, but it is a very fine line.
There will always be the 'nefarious' poster who will 'try it on' by showing a picture of a fungus known for its 'make you silly' properties, and asking if it is a harmless fungus with a slight resemblance (to the naughty one)
The poster might think we will fall into his/her trap and say "No, this is a so and so" - thus confirming for the poster it is what they hoped it was.
But fresh or new members to WAB unaware of the rules or keen to put their skills to the test may quickly rush in and say "No, it's not a so and so, but a Psilocybe this or that.
In such a case, we can only rely on a moderator censoring the post ASAP and to that end it would help the mods if members click on the alarm symbol to alert them.
Neil.

| | | Re: Are these fungi what I think they are?! Chris has rightly pointed to our rule and I'm happy about the content as it stands.
Should it go further or be hijacked then it will be closed or removed.
As Neil stated it's best to report a thread if concerned ... rather than reply and possibly invite inappropriate posts.

I originally posted because I wondered what they were, simple as that. My children play on the swings all the time, and I didn't like the idea of these unidentified schrooms lurking here and there, when one of my children has a liking for raw mushroom. I could envisage her taking a bite, since she happily eats blackberries straight off the hedgerow and tries everything and anyting.
As to my reaction to them, it could just as easily have been triggered by an excess of caffein!! That ethiopian roast is just too nice... But who knows.
I'm intrigued by the whole thing and I think only an extreme purist would find fault with that :-)
And no, I'm not playing dumb, it could be that I'm just plain dumb! Again, who knows.... ;-)

Chaz | I suggest you teach your child that it is not safe to taste anything without your approval first as even edible but old maggoty fungi can cause illness. |
