| | | Which Jelly Fungus This was photographed in the cairngorms on a dry day following recent rain. The lens cap alongside is approx 70mm. The fungus was found on the stone photographed. |

| | | Re: Which Jelly Fungus So according to some other posts the item in the photograph is "Nostoc sp".
when i look on the web for this it shows photos of strings of cells etc. can someone explain please how it goes from these strings to these lumps of jelly like
items. |

| | | Re: Which Jelly Fungus I pointed you at that thread to show some of the theories
personally I'm not convinced by the Nostoc theory for these white jelly patches - Nostoc usually looks like this: Green Fungi for ID
it is a cyanobacterium (and therefore a prokaryote) which consists of those strings of cells surrounded by a gelatinous sheath - therefore in damp conditions it swells (and in dry weather virtually disappears) the same is true for various gelatinous fungi of course
I think someone needs to get these finds under a microscope and possibly do a bit of chemical analysis; otherwise it's just guesswork - they may not all have the same cause after all
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Which Jelly Fungus What other posts say it is Nostok ?
Nostok is only a possibility - if your find has strings of cells it could be from an amphibian.
Or perhaps you looked at a photo of one of the MANY different TYPES of jelly like 'blobs' on the web, then wrongly decided that is what yours was/is. and now wonder why yours is swollen. More likely than not, yours has soaked up water, but we still do not know the source of your blobs, but they ain't fungal.
There is a fungal genus called Exidia which has several species which could be described as white jelly like blobs, but these are attached to and grow on wood.
Neil.
EDIT: I hadn't seen that very informative post/link by Chris, so, it's back to the drawing board then, but the internet is full of crazy idea's on what these types of blobs could be and although they may look alike, it doesn't mean they are all from the same animal, bird, or whatever is suggested.

| | | Re: Which Jelly Fungus I found something very similar recently, near Carrbridge. I started a thread here in the Myxomycete section as I thought it may be a slime mould.
I also posted some of the photos on my local Biological recording group who have done some research and some of these Jelly's are amphibian in origin, possibly left-overs from predation. Any black spheres are eggs and the white jelly is albumen that has swelled up as it has gotten wet.
I've added some of my photos of it below;

Regards, Audrey. | a very convincing suggestion; I think DW's "strings of cells" are in photomicrographs showing the typical Nostoc structure

| | | Re: Which Jelly Fungus I've just remembered an old post where somebody suggested these granules which you place in plant pots which swell up and retain moisture could sometimes be the culprit - just something else to consider, but at least we succeeded in keeping this thread 'down to earth'.
