Could this be Hoof fungus - Fomes fomentarius

Hello everyone,

I found this strange and oddly shaped fungus and would like to know if I'm right in thinking it's hoof fungus. All the photos I've seen of this fungus look more conical in shape and this one is bulbous but hoof like at the base.

Ah, you have found where I left my Play-Dough about 50 years ago !

Hoof Fungus is very scarce in Suffolk, but I saw plenty in the New Forest and even more when I went to Yorkshire in May this year and this doesn't look like Hoof Fungus to me - not sure if it's a Ganoderma even.

So maybe it is a funny shaped Phellinus igniarius as this is very solid just like yours.
I really don't know.

Hope you haven't been in a sulk over the loss of this Play-dough for 50 years then...drowning your sorrows in cheese and vino!!!

Thanks for the pointer re:Phellinus igniarius ...the photos and info in my books and on the 'net' make this a more likely I.D. Although Mr Phillips does say 'possibly a complex species not fully resolved'...or is that me he's talking about!

I'll go back and have another look to see if it is possibly a Willow...could be as the trees are all on the river bank.Mmmmm...maybe I should have added that wee bit of info, oops. I'm now thinking (dangerous) that maybe my 3rd posting of these two small brackets could be the same species.

Thats a failing ganoderma, panic G. australe or Applanatum=lipsiense

G australe if the host died making it produce poor formed and often sterile fruit bodies.

or if g applanatum the wood has been fully degraded and ther is nothing left for the fungi to feed on and grow.
