| | | information regarding mollisa cinerea please Hi.
I recognise the mollisa cinerea (grey disco) BUT are the yellow ones immature forms or are they a different type of fungus?
Thanks for you're time.
regards tn.

regards tn. | Hi tn
They are Orbilia ... possibly delicatula. A very difficult genus and you could well have several types here!
The Mollisia could also be Mollisia ligni too!

. . . . | do you? really? it's a mollisioid fungus, certainly, but without careful examination of ascus tip reaction to Lugol's solution, checking vacuolar contents of paraphyses (just to make 100% certain it is a Mollisia, making spore measurements, assessing the amount and nature of lipid bodies in the spores, etc., you won't me able to come up with a name and even that may prove difficult (there are a lot of undescribed species out there)
that's the truth, I'm afraid; as hard - if not harder - than Orbilia
cheers
Chris

John | sorry John, but that is not Mollisia ligni - you might be going by the illustration in Fungi of Switzerland I? Unfortunately that's wrongly named . . . .
see Pick up sticks
cheers

| | | Re: information regarding mollisa cinerea please Hi both.
I can see that correctly identifying these is a major undertaking.
Another one from a couple of days ago.
As I do not have the resources or expertise to correctly id these little beauties would it be safer if I just refered to them as disco's or some other generic title?
After all it is only for my information so that I can catalogue them in my picture library on my computer.
The problem comes of course if I want to post them to the Gallery.
ANY help or comments gratefully appreciated.
regards tn.

Possibly a Lecanora species but I'm sure Alan or Jenny will advise better.

Regarding what to call an 'unknown' species for uploading to the Gallery, you could use the abbreviation 'cf' from the Latin word 'confer' i.e Compare with!
cf Mollisia ligni
You could of course just label the image 'Possibly' Mollisia ligni stating that the ID is based on image / macroscopic features only.
I have thousands of this type
Hope this helps

John | Not either of the above, but I think it's safe to say you have a couple of Lecanora species (two different coloured apothecia in left hand image).
I'm sure AlanS would add you need to do microscopy on those too: for crystal inclusions in the apothecia as well as spores etc. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
