| | | Re: To dry for fungi?! In the New Forest we have had a very dry period over the last three weeks, the top layers have dried out and the fungi has vanished. I think the warm spring and wet summer brought everything out early, I've never seen so many Ceps out in August, but the recent dry period has brought an early end to the prolific season down here.

| | | Re: To dry for fungi?! It's the same in Suffolk, west and east. We are getting the same species just about showing but overall, numbers are extremely low.
But it is still not too late - back in 2009 the BMS had their annual foray in Suffolk, but they chose November and I thought they would see hardly anything but I needn't have feared for the rains came, the warmth stayed and it was highly successful.

Ken | I know you are right, but I want brackets, penny buns, earth stars and Dryads saddles. The excess, the cornucopia, the rampant trumpeting of a Golden October of fungi!
Think I will go and have a lie down.

Think I will go and have a lie down. | You're just a greedy begger
The golden October will come in November - be patient.

Neil. | Or we had it in September ... But those very hot few days at the end of September seem to have put the scuppers on things. It had been doing grand things throughout August and September.
I led a grassland fungi foray in September and when I arranged it thought it might well be too early for a good show. It was the best weekend on that site so far this year, 10 waxcap species ...
I'm hoping the very recent frosts will kick-start things. I've heard it said that frost isn't good for fungi either, but in my experience particularly with the grassland fungi they seem to need a dose of cold to get them going .... just as long as it isn't the wrong type of frost, i.e. frost that hangs around all day long. Just a touch of frost.
