| | | Gymnopilus penetrans? Please, can anyone confirm my tentative ID?
Photographed at Clumber last week. Growing on a rotting tree stump, most likely conifer but hard to be sure.
Grateful for any suggestions

| | | Re: Gymnopilus penetrans? It could be - the gill connection seems to be about right, you have that 'rusty' effect on the gill edges, the profile seems good, but the gill colour is not a deep rusty colour as I would expect.
Maybe most of the spores have been shed, giving that pale appearance.

It could be that some of the colour has paled because of the amount of rain we had. A lot of the fungi seemed to have had the colour washed out. Whether that would affect this species, I really don't know.
Antway. Thanks again for your help - it all adds to the s l o w build up of knowledge.

Yes John, I had a great time. Photographed a beautiful Orange Birch Bolete - thanks to Mal for the tips on ID. Saw my first ever Plumbs and Custard, damaged alas so no picture; what a beautiful fungus. Went back for a picture of the Salmon Salad and found an Earth Fan further up the track. Lots of stacking practice!!
I was able to recognise a lot more stuff with some confidence, but a lot still has me scratching the old head.
You'll be pleased to know the dogs had a ball. Holly hardly stopped running for 4 days.
