| | | Help to ID 2 fungi please Hi, please could I ask for some advice/suggestions as to what the following 2 fungi could be that we spotted yesterday in our local woods here in Kent.
1.
Found in moss and grass covered bank with oak and silver birch trees close by
I'd say height 8-9cm, cap diameter around 5cm, cap height around 2cm
The cap was brown with darker brown or black markings
2.
Growing in an open area of woodland through mostly moss covered ground
Silver birch, sweet chestnut, fly agaric and woolly milk cap (I think) close by
Around 10cm height, cap diameter around 6cm, cap height around 2cm
Markings on top of cap as shown in photo below
Any advice as to what these two could be would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

| | | Re: Help to ID 2 fungi please Hello Wayne,
I'm afraid gone are the days when one could just look at a Leccinum, note the nearest tree and come to a (often false) conclusion on macro characteristics alone - these days we have to slice the fungus down the middle and note any colour changes to the exposed flesh.
Somebody with more experience with Leccinum species than myself may be able to help you out, so hang on in there.
Neil.
PS. I'm tempted to say Mottled Bolete (Leccinum varicolor) for the second specimen, but the cap is not as stated in the literature, and also we would need to see the colour of the flesh.

1. Orange Oak Bolete, Leccinum quercinum
2. Brown Birch Bolete, Leccinium scabrum - with a dryed out cap. |

For the first image, apart from the cap colour being too brown, the scabres on the stem are not right for Leccinum quercinum. This will be one of the brown-capped species but there isn't enough information in the images to identify either to species level.
