Iodine Bonnet (Mycena filopes)

Have i got this one wrong please, this was growing inside a Hollow tree and although not in the photo there was a very large spider in there as well so i was reluctant to put my hand in to move it for photo of the underside thank you help would really be appreciated

Hmm after doing another search i think this could be a Milking Bonnet (Mycena galopus)

... which it won't. The jizz is wrong for Mycena galopus.

Ah right thank you, if i can get back this week i will take a pair of gloves with me i just hate spiders especially when they would fill a saucer thanks for the replies...Ray

I am just trying to get folk to look more closely, do tests, make spore prints etc. I think its the best way to learn

hi Ray

Mycena is a large (around 150 taxa in the UK - as I often ask, how many are there in the books you have?) and difficult genus - much more difficult than most people realise; I have had long conversations with Ern Emmett (Britain's "Mr Mycena") and he has occasional difficulties himself

you really do need to check a whole series of micro-characters most of the time - number of sterigmata on the basidia, the make-up of the cap cuticle, whether the spores are amyloid or not, the type of cystidia along the gill edge etc.

with perhaps half a dozen exceptions I would never attempt to name a Mycena in the field - and even with the commoner, easier to recognise ones I will from time to time do the microscopy just to check I'm getting it right

btw I do not think you have Mycena filopes there - nothing about it looks right - of course if it has 2-spored basidia . . . . but of course one can't see that from here (and anyway so does M. galericulata most of the time and several others in the genus)

I'm afraid that is the plain (and for you in this case not very helpful) truth

PS if you really want to get to grips with Mycena I would suggest getting the two volumes on the genus by Maas Geesteranus, published in 1992 as "Mycenas of the Northern Hemisphere" (391 and 493 pages respectively!
