| | | Pholiota or Gymnopilus Hi,
can anyone help me with this? At first I thought it was a Scalycap but the stipe is quite thick. It was growing out of a fir stump in the New Forest.
many thanks. |

I'd opt for Gymnopilus junonius.

| | | Re: Pholiota or Gymnopilus The OP states found on a fir, two of my books state this species grows on decaying deciduous trees, then another site says it grows on both deciduous and coniferous - gah talk about confusing the beginner.
Guess fungi don't read books

| | | Re: Pholiota or Gymnopilus It is possible it was a Deciduous tree stump. My stump recognition skills aren't great. It was mixed woodland and they had cut both.
