| | | very distinctive fungus for id please Hi. Can anyone id this one for me please. When I saw a couple of groups of these yesterday I though I had a good idea what is was and at least would have no trouble id'ing it if I was wrong.
Hours later I now have no idea.
Found growing IN MOSS on a grass bank. NO TREES in the near vacinity. This has ruled out most of my ideas.
Most of the characteristics are obvious from the photo's. Cap powdery light brown. Gills white and crowded. stipe belted. flaked below and light brown above ring. Spores white. flesh white. Amonia or bleech odour when cut.
This has turned out to be a troublesome beggar all help gratefully recieved.
regards tn.

(?) no need for language like that gill colour is a guide (bit over-exposed here), and yes, jasonis tends to be darker (but the more I do this mycology lark the less reliance I put on colour . . . . ) - best way to be sure is spore size and presence or absence of arthroconidia in the context under the pileipellis

Chris | I would expect this one to be C amianthinum rather than C jasonis because of the gill colour in particular, as all the C jasonis I have come across have been quite noticeably yellow, and have had a different jizz. All of the C jasonis I've found have been in woodland (wooded former heathland), or the few found in grassland/heath have actually been under trees. Anyone else noticed this? There is some overlap of habitat though.
But the sure-fire way is the presence/absence of those arthroconidia.
Some Cystoderma jasonis

One of my micro photos of the scalp of Cystoderma jasonis:
And an earlier discussion on WAB where I was talking to myself ... Cystoderma - arthroconidia
Hope that helps.
