| | | Brown Russula and a hedgehog Hi
I spotted these today. The first one I'm pretty sure is a Russula but I haven't seen this colour before -it was a lovely chestnut brown.
The othe photo's are Hydnum but I just wanted to ask if it is rufescens.
Thanks. |

| | | Re: Brown Russula and a hedgehog For the Russula I'd have a stab at R.melitodes.
Looks like a contender from what can be seen of the macro characteristics.
It is apparently quite common in Southern England, under Quercus, Carpinus, Betula etc. on diverse soils.
You might get nearer to confirming the ID if you have kept a specimen that you can compare with characteristics for R.melitodes.
Can't comment on the Hydnum - I think it would need microscopy to be sure.

Mike. |

| | | Re: Brown Russula and a hedgehog Thanks Mike.
I'll go back and check it against R.melitodes I see so many yellow, ochre and purple Russula that this brown one stood out.
I've seen alot of Hydnum repandum over the years but this location has this darker coloured top and the occasional "mushroom looking" stipe and cap which I haven't seen anywhere else so I thought it may be rufescens.

There has been some taxonomical change whereby records of R.intergra found in broadleaf woodlands in southern England have been revised to R.melitodes or R.carminipes. (Which are both said to be macroscopically similar), but R.carminipes has a dark briownish-purple appearance rather than chestnut-brown.
