| | | Image colours Hi
I've just posted 5 photos to the fungi Gallery and the small versions have lost their original colour. When I click on the main image to get the larger version the original colour returns (see the Vermillion Waxcap). Has anyone any idea what I might be doing wrong?
Many thanks |

| | | Re: Image colours Hi Waxcap and welcome to WAB.
I've just been loooking at your images in the Gallery. (Nice pics by the way. ).
On my monitor, there doesn't seem to be any difference between the colour showing in the thumbnails, and the colour showing when the full size images are viewed.
Must say though, that the two photos labelled vermillion waxcap do seem to be somewhat less vibrant in colour for what I'd normally expect for that species.
I can't suggest anything that you might be doing wrong, as photos viewable in WAB's Gallery/image library are usually pretty good as far as matching the colours of whatever was uploaded. (Certainly is the case with regards to my photo uploads).
Maybe others will comment further if they can see something different.
Regards
Mike.

Yes, I see what you mean - Nick, John or Mike will come to your rescue as I'm useless with computers.
Neil.
EDIT: I see Mike already has.
Just to confirm Mike, when I enlarge the image on my IMac, the colours are far more vibrant and real looking. (That's enlarging to the FULL size by the way)

The colour changes to the original when I click on the main image to the larger version. You can see the the original colour at http: Fungi of The New Forest on the Gallery that I posted today - it's much more colourful there.

I've just had a (very) quick look at the 35 images on your New Forest website and must say there are some cracking shots there!!
I can also see just how much more colourful and more like a vermillion waxcap your shots on there look in comparison to what I'm seeing here with the same shots on WAB.
That's very strange indeed -something I've never known anyone to comment on previously.
Just out of interest - are you using an IMac? as Neil (Fairplay) seems to be getting the same colour change that you are.
I'm using a PC and the thumbnail, the small photo size, and the large photo size all have the muted colours on my screen.
Regards,
Mike. |

| | | Re: Image colours It is for this very reason that I upload my images at 800x600 pixels so that they're at optimum quality without anyone having to click to make it larger. I always find that the images before clicking to enlarge are somewhat dull, soft and lifeless and then come alive in the enlarge.
It has been this way for years! |

| | | Re: Image colours Thanks GLSammy and Fairplay and Nick
Yes all of my images seem to have lost a fair bit colour saturation which returns on selecting the full version. Maybe I'll upload in a width of 880px next time which seems to be the Gallery display size.
Mike
I'm on a PC and the images were converted to .jpg from CR2 (Canon Raw) in Lightroom 3

There are several reasons why images look bad on 'certain' sites, WAB being one of them!
In a nutshell:
• The compression algorithms used to process files vary quite a lot depending on the server involved. It's a compromise between processor time and storage
• Colour space is important as most browsers and monitors struggle with large colour space. Hence why you should always convert to sRGB if possible
• Further sharpening during uploading often leads to a big decrease in detail
Some day it will change but don't hold your breath
