| | | The Sun's 'Fun' Guide Anyone see this today? (was handed to my by a guy at work before you ask ).
Must admit, I learned a few things - never knew that Sulphur Tuft or Common Ink Cap could be deadly

| | | Re: The Sun's 'Fun' Guide Who the hell is eating C. butyracea?!?!?!?!
Surely that's just like eating grass as opposed to an Apple...
Nonsensical. Will be funny though if the Sun get their backsides into trouble after some (Sun Reading ) idiot eats something dodgy on the word of this 'expert' (who I've never heard of?)...
I knew that if eaten with alcohol, the Common InkCap can induce a coma but have never heard of it to result in a fatality... and well, who's eating Sulphur Tuft?

| I think his credentials are OK - found this on a Google search. Too good for the Sun probably! Paul F Hamlyn, CURRICULUM VITAE

Paul will have done his research and knows his stuff.
You'd be suprised at what some people will try to eat.

| | | Re: The Sun's 'Fun' Guide I have no issues with the source of the information - Paul Hamlyn seems like a pretty accomplished fellow, but I suspect the article has had the usual tabloid spin put on it - sometimes fungi are simply not salacious enough...after all, the brown roll-rim looks pretty dull and doesn't sound very deadly does it?.

| | | Re: The Sun's 'Fun' Guide It looks to me as if Paul Hamlyn merely gave this sensible quote, "Go out with experts to teach you how to identify species. Never eat any mushroom unless you are sure of it's identity."
The "guide" is credited to Tim Spanton, a Sun journalist. |

The "guide" is credited to Tim Spanton, a Sun journalist. | Good point - that explains everything...

| | | Re: The Sun's 'Fun' Guide If any good comes out of all this, then hopefully lots of people are going to be picking False Chanterelles, be disappointed, tell their friends they are not worth bothering about and loose interest.
But I bet there are loads of idiots who have picked False Chanterelles by mistake and bragged how 'good' they taste just because it says so in the book.
I strongly believe every edible guide should ALWAYS show possible look-a-likes side by side with the real thing because what will happen now is people will pick anything like a Bolete and assume it's a Cep and anything like a supermarket mushroom, including the Yellow Stainer, as a Field or Horse Mushroom.
Serves them right for reading it in the Sun.
Neil.
P.S. I wonder what Paul Hamlyn thought of the finished article ? |
