| | | Smaller and smaller. (Ascomycetes) I caught sight of this slime mould on rotten wood today so took a picture.
Looking through the viewfinder I noticed some Asco discs so took a pic of them too.
Surprised when they came out so red, they looked very dark/black to the naked eye (they are quite small 1 - 2mm across)
It wasn't until the picture was on the computer screen that I saw the Mollisias and the little black balls (no idea what they are)
Another disc from a few days ago, again on rotten wood.
Probably a "needs microscopy" job but looks similar to Catinella olivacea

Steve | The pink ones almost certainly the teleomorph of an Ascocoryne species, correct about Mollisia of course; I suspect the black ones are Melanomma pulvis-pyrius but they need to go under the 'scope of course
I'd be happy with calling that Catinella olivacea without microscopy actually
always nice to see some asco's on WAB - nice work Steve
cheers
Chris

Chris | Me too One of the few easy ones to recognise in the field, especially when you find a good group of them as shown here:

| | | Re: Smaller and smaller. (Ascomycetes) Thank you both,
I've never noticed Ascocoryne at such an early stage before, be interesting to keep an eye on how they develope.
I found John's shot of C. olivacea earlier when I was looking for them on the net. My few specimens can't compete wit that either inquantity or quality, it is nice to be able to a definite name to them though.
regards
