| | Are these Boletus edulis? I posted this earlier but it seems to have vanished.
I found these yesterday in the vicinity of birch. No camera so couldn't photograph in situ.
Very firm, almost hard caps, pores not changing colour when bruised. Flesh unchanging on cutting, apart from a slight vinaceous line appearing just at the junction of flesh and cap.
I couldn't get a spore print. I put it on white paper (as was expecting olive spores) for three hours but nothing visible.
The other caps were slightly lighter than the one shown in the main picture. Are they too dark to be B. edulis? Could they be B. aereus?
Any thoughts much appreciated. |

They're darker in the cap than I expected. Very exciting find! |

I have read the rules, and I don't wish to broach them or offend the ethos of the site, which I can see does not encourage foraging fungi to eat.
I couldn't take photos in situ as I didn't have my camera with me. I usually bring a specimen home anyhow, to try to get a spore print, and as I don't take my larger book out with me. Please don't assume that just because they are an edible species, I am intending to eat them.
I have had this conversation with a moderator, by the way, and have told him that I am happy for him to remove this thread if he deems that appropriate.
My question was mainly whether they are B. edulis or aereus, as the cap colour was darker than I expected for edulis.
Thanks for your help though. |
