Found these today growing on the underside of a large dead coniferous tree trunk buried in the ground. each individual is about 8mm tall and 1mm across the cap. Any idea what they are called please.

I am pretty sure these are not oak pin.
This is another colony at a different location not the one from the other day
I will monitor them both.

| | | Re: huge colony of tiny fungi for id if poss please You need to have a good look with a hand lens. I can't see any sign of gills on the few specimens where the underside of the cap is visible, which makes me think Cudoniella could be possible.

I have studied these closely and can confirm that they DO NOT have gills.
However they are definately on a pine stump. Is oak pin just a misnoma does it grow on coniferous wood??

regards tn. | It grows on a range of deciduous tree stumps but I don't know about coniferous wood.
But strictly speaking, you should identify your fungus from its intrinsic characteristics rather than ruling out species based on what it was growing on (although we all do it  ). Even if other people haven't recorded the species growing on a particular substrate, yours could be the first.
Not much help I know.
