| | | Re: Birch Bolete ? It does make sense to put them all in one post - as long as there ain't too many of 'them', but it is always best to have them numbered or clearly separated to avoid confusion.
As for the fungus, a few tests are needed but if this was with Birch there is every chance this is Leccinum scabrum

Out of interest what sort of tests would be required ? Would a spore microscope picture be sufficient ? |

| | | Re: Birch Bolete ? A good test with the leccinums and other boletes is to slice the stalk in half and check for any colour changes, noting where and what colour.
Hopefully one of the more exp. mycologists will correct me if I'm wrong - birch bolete will blue in the stalk somewhat, but not the base. Whereas the superficially similar slate bolete, blues in he base but goes grey in the upper stem.
(I know this 'cos we found a pile of mahoosive Slate Bolete on Sowton industrial estate over the weekend, +ve id confirmed by the country recorder Jeff Benn).

| | | Re: Birch Bolete ? The Birch Bolete/Leccinum scabrum will not stain blue anywhere when cut. It may well bruise a slight pink/reddish which then tends to turn brown after some time.
