Dusky Puffball, as a common name, usually relates to Lycoperdon nigrescens, and I don't think your find is that.
Common Puffball - Lycoperdon perlatum goes brown with age, but I must say that there is something about your find that doesn't look like any aged L.perlatum I've yet found.
I'll await the opinions of the more experienced on this one!!!

| | | Re: Puffball ID please I think if you had explored further by cutting in half this would have revealed gills inside. Beyond that, I'll leave it to others to speculate on what it might have been.

Ken | Ooops! -Yes - a closer look at the upturned fungus shows that this is no Puffball. (Should've gone to Specsavers  ).
