| | | Fungi from Hoddesdonpark Wood Few more making an appearance today, lots of Marismus, a few yellow Russulas, Amanita citrina and Mycena pura
Also this Tremella mesentaria
And this little one growing on the roots of a fallen birch. I think it's Boletus pruinatus as the cap is so dark. It did look slightly yellowish when I picked it and I would say has turned the faintest blue now.

Think I was fooled by the very dark cap. What should I have looked out for, was it not really yellow enough to be pruinatus?

Laura | Laura,
I'm not sure if 'badius' means the colour 'bay', but 'bay' is usually used to describe the coat of a reddish brown horse, (I think 'sorrel' may mean the same thing) and the cap colours of your fungus are perfectly reddish brown.
'Pruinatus' means very finely hairy - like velvet ? The cap of your fungus is very smooth and shiny and suits B.badius perfectly.

Think I need to brush up on my Latin, I guessed wrongly that pruinatus meant 'plum coloured'!
Now of course I shall have to be on the lookout for a real pruinatus as I don't think I've ever seen one.

| | | Re: Fungi from Hoddesdonpark Wood I think we're both wrong Laura, I have just looked in my Collins 'gem' Latin book for 'pruinatus' and it means like a hoar-frost/frosty appearance, whilst there is nothing for 'badius'.
