| | | Fungus found on Millipede Hello all
During a foray at Clumber Park 13th August 2011 with Les and John we discovered this 'fungus' covered Millipede.
Any comments, as ever much appreciated

| | | Re: Fungus found on Millipede I've just spent half an hour reading chapter 6, Parasites & Predators, from the book, 'Fungi' by Spooner and Roberts (New Naturalist series) and can only come to the conclusion it is an Entomophthora species, but you probably know that already.

John | tricky one unless it's actually an iced candied ammonite and you're trying to fool us
I think I know the answer to this - do you have the specimen?
Chris

| | | Re: Fungus found on Millipede Hi John
I have had a look through the keys to Entomophthora by Waterhouse & Brady, looking in column for host and millipedes are not listed as a host nor or any other arthropods, although for E.major the host is 'Various' and it does forms white mats!

| | | Re: Fungus found on Millipede Norfolk naturalist Ted Elllis did a lot of work on Entomorpha fungi I am sure I have the orignal articles somewhere in my collection, a fascinating subject. If one is prepared to take up this study.

| | | Re: Fungus found on Millipede not sure it's an Entomophthora but when John's happy it's dry I'm happy to have a look at it - it can go as an honorary insect on to the Fungus - Insect interactions thread
if you go on to FRDBI - FRDBI associated organism search
type in 'millipede' and there's a few suggestions (though frankly some are ludicrous - Ramularia didyma for example is an obligate parasite all right - but of buttercups!)
PS if you go through them most of them seem to date from a time when Tom Hering was seriously into millipede dung - now that's my sort of mycology
let's only have posts on that pesky Deer Ticks thread which involve fungi on deer tick dung in future
keep me posted John . . .
cheers
Chris
