| | | Auricularia auricula-judae Latin Name : Auricularia auricula-judae
Common Names : Jelly Ear , Jews Ear
Location : Often found growing on living and decaying Elder / Sambucus nigra
Notes : This fungi resides in a brittle / dry form throughout Summer and in a gelatinous / wet form during the Winter.
In Summer :
In Winter :
Auricularia auricula-judae was the first species of fungi that I was able to identify in the field as a teenager, and today it is still one species of fungi I cant walk past without taking a quick glance at its state. Likewise Auricularia auricula-judae holds a rich social and cultural history as a species of fungus - a remnant of which still persists in its Latin name. Anyone interested in the extended cultural history of this species can send me message whenever
I will be taking LOTS of photos of this species over the coming weeks/months/years and will submit the best images here on this thread.
Peace
J

Here we can see that recent moisture is slowly starting the process of hydration in these specimens.
Where Auricularia auricula-judae is 'common' , it still remains one of the most interesting species IMO.
Peace

Thanks Chris I should have said "...my favourite of the fungi" or more correctly / simply "...my favourite fungus" Cheers. Please can you help educate me/us about the overall development / life-cycle of Auricularia auricula-judae. The fruiting body is present in both its dehydrated and hydrated state for several seasons/years. Do individuals in the troop grow larger after each wet period and then shrivel back during the drier periods as a larger dehydrated body? Thus increasing size each season?
Also at which age / stage are the fruiting bodies productive in spores please?
Thanks in advance.
