| | blueing boletes help! Hi all,
grateful for a steer/help with these two blue staining boletus.
This first was near silver birch, on woodchip mulch and single.
Yellow pores stain blue after a few seconds where pressed, but only for a short while, and when cut, stipe had no apparent net and no change of colour to blue.
It was small. about 3'' aross cap which was a bit velvety and stem was slightly reddish - I have this as Bay Bolete, Boletus badius, any views please?
And then today, this was growing under Beech, some oak close by too, with a few bodies together, but was quite large, about 7'' across cap. Quite old specimens.
But they blued instantly and across the whole body, stipe and all, which remained blue. Pores seem to have been yellowish at base at one time, but are reddish/rusty now (with spores?) before cutting them into blueness.
Stipe seems to have redness too, and like the other, no clear net.
Is this B. luridiformis?
hopefully there enough detail in the pics to narrow them down!
Cheers
Ken

Ken | I would say yes, luridiformis, Ken

| | | Re: blueing boletes help! I would agree with Chris on the second one.
The first is more interesting. Cap 4-7cm velvety pinkish-brown often cracking. Pores bright yellow bruising blue Stipe yellowish flushed red over most of its length. Flesh of the cap flushing distincly pink below the cuticle with a narrow blue zone above the tubes and upper stipe - little or no change in rest of flesh with no flame-orange in base of stipe. All of that seems to fit so I would go for
Xerocomus bubalinus
Which is one for Kew.

Mal | Thanks a lot guys. Quite exciting really!
Mal, I agree with your description, I thought the flesh under the cap was quite red 'meaty' looking and that puzzled me.
So this may be for Kew you think - I have Bryn Dentinger as the latest contact, is that right as far as you know?
I still have the specimen in good order, drying.
Sorry Chris, not in Yorks, but the other was............
Cheers
Ken

Mal | Confirmed as Xerocomus bubalinus by Bryn at Kew. Quite pleased!
