| | | Boletus for thought ....
So convinced was I that I had B. impolitus that I have named them this - then half way thro upload something stayed my hand and I clicked out and away and had another look at various things and have concluded that these are Boletus pseudoregius because there was no iodine smell, the pores blued slightly turqoise after more than half and hour and then faded to dark grey, the cap colour is better for the latter and the stipe with the quite noticeable yellow almost cheesy lookin net with the pinkish belt of colour below. They were under oak and beech in the river bottom of the Trough of Bowland - so quite acidic but open parkland appearance - sheep grazed - peat moorland drains into the river.
What does anyone else think?

It does have the possible look about it, my first impressions were B. appendiculatus but that red/pink band on the stem put me off, it certainly points toward what you suggest. I think you might need to do some work on it if possible. The person to run it by would of course be Alan Hills or if you have the time, get it over to Kew. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Andy | Thanks for that Andy. If it is this then its not in Fungi of Switzerland (unles under aprevious name?) so I have nothing to check against for micro and again not normally doing micro work I wouldn't be confident. I have a specimen sat on the kitchen windowsill so yes I'm keen to send if off - but who or where would be best - I'd hate it deteriorate in the post? I have a feeling about it and yes when I first saw it my thoughts while there looking in the books was that it was appendiculatus - but I've seen this before and there was no overhanging cap on any of them which is why I turned to impolitus - but despite sniffing till I was dizy there was no outright smell but I wouldn't know what iodoform is like anyway! And that deeply wriggly cheesy lookin net is something I've never seen before!

Exactly it's a wonderful area, which is why it was nicked to try and give a bit of class to the red rose county
vice-counties follow the old ridings, not recent strokes of Whitehall pens and that's all county recorders are interested in - you go to Saddleworth, tell them they're part of Oldham/Lancashire and see if you escape with your life . . .

Chris | Now you know you shouldn't believe all you read in Wiki-la-la-land
In any case the bits you refer to are way up on the tops and nowhere near the river bottom which has been in my back pocket giving class exclusively to the Red Rose County for aeons .......... and to think I used to like Yorkshire chaps ........

these things are not stable - look at the way Humberside came and went - North Licolnshire people hated as much as those in the East Riding
look, whereabouts were you (you can pm me and I'll keep the site confidential if you want), there is a good chance that it is a (West Riding) not North Yorkshire record, and if it is I'm interested
seriously, we record by vice-counties - it keeps recording areas stable
best
