| | | Another hunky, chunky Bolete Ok, this one was found in the same woodland as the other monster Bolete, towering over the leaf litter amongst broadleaf trees.
A light brown, slightly cracked cap surface. Cream pores with just the slightest hint of pink. Signs of bluing on the base of the stem and also on the cap where it had been nibbled by some woodland critter.
When cut, the flesh seemed to display no colour change although, looking at the picture, I can detect just the faintest signs of blue. You have to look hard. Maybe I didn't wait long enough before I took the picture. Another lesson learnt the hard way...
After running this through my Bolete key I have come up with Tylopilus felleus.
Further suggestions welcome and appreciated, as always
Many thanks

quoting from British Fungus Flora on Boletus et al. (revised version, 2005): "There is . . . . . a single British species assignable to Tylopilus. The genus is large and although there are several true members of the genus in North America the centre of distribution appears to be countries in the southern hemisphere. Only British species: Tylopilus felleus (Bull.: Fr.) Karsten."
the above seems not to be borne out insofar as Species Fungorum only appears to recognise four Tylopilus species (if one does not accept that Porphyrellus is congeneric - and Watling and Hills don't)
but the fact remains there is only one British one
