| | | Laccaria species? Can anyone help me identify these to species level?
I found them growing on a mossy boulder at the edge of a stream on moorland in late March.
The spore print was white.
The caps were 2cm across and the stems about 1cm x 0.3cm.
Thanks! |

| | | Re: Laccaria species? Not 100% certain, but these have the look of Heath Navel - Lichenomphalia umbellifera.

| | | Re: Laccaria species? I thought maybe Laccaria tortilis, but the gills are too decurrent, so I'd say Mike is probably correct - and seeing 'skarekrow' is based in Glasgow, where L .umbellifera is more inclined to grow, this adds weight to Mike's suggestion.

The gills are not really decurrent as you would expect for Lichenomphalina. How about Laccaria tortillis?

Peter | This calls for the official judiciator (however that is spelt !)

| | | Re: Laccaria species? This is where the microscope makes it so much easier, as the spores are very different. You can only do so much with a photo.

| | | Re: Laccaria species? I think I will bow to the concensus of opinion and agree with L.tortilis.
I did look at L.tortilis, but perhaps a too quick look at the third photo, plus the overall "pale" appearance of the fruitbodies got me on the L.umbellifera track.
However, the more I look at that photo it does appear that the gills aren't really very decurrent, (and, I've just discovered that one of the preferred habitats for L.tortilis is beside streams), so that would seem to edge the bets in it's favour.
Microscopy rules!!

| | | Re: Laccaria species? Thanks everyone!
I had them tentatively identified as L.tortilis (after initial misidentification as Moss Oysterling ).
As usual, I collected these thinking they were so distinctive that I'd have no problems whatsoever identifying them - until I opened up a book! |

Regards,
Mike. | sadly that's correct - 2-spored basidia, quite large globose spores with long spines . . . sorted; otherwise . . . .
