the sickener?

Hi!

Was just wondering if this is the sickener (Russula emetica). I saw it just outside a coniferous plantation near Ingleby Greenhow...

Can't be sure from the photo, but these have the look of emerging Larch Bolete - Suillus grevillei.

I'd expect the Sickener to be more of a richer red colour, and with a pure white stipe.

Looking at the image in high resolution, they are definitely Suillus grevillei.

you really do need to (carefully) pick one and have a good look at the underside that way you would see immediately this is not a Russula

Yes - now that I've looked at the photo at largest size, evidence of the ring can be seen in the upper fruitbody, and they both have that very typical look of young S.grevillei).
