Neil. | Thanks Neil . I will keep my eyes open.
Here's the tree in question. It is a splendid specimen of a tree in its own right to be fair.
Again today there where a few mature specimens of Leccinum durisculum on display
These will possibly be the last images of Slate Bolete for this season,, since we are expecting a flush of Leccinum scabrum beneath the Birch in the area any day soon
peace J

| | | Re: Leccinum duriusculum / Slate Bolete ? Help please I'll have to see if I can post a picture of the mature slate boletes my wife spotted on an industrial estate near Exeter (poplar was present - we think its an ancient hedgrow that runs through the estate). They were enormous things, well outside the size quoted in the collins guide, and the stipe had started to peel back, making some look quite grotesque.
If I recall, the largest was about a foot wide..
Regards,
Matt |

Matt | Cool stuff.. yes . please share photos.Otherwise it's like I'm documenting the subject on my own,, which may appear dull... and doesn't truly reflect the presence of this species in Britain . Hedge-rows and Industrialism is the pastiche that contemporary Britain is made from afterall
Since recent rainfall, several of the caps I observed today where thrice the size they were under recent periods of draught. All the fruiting bodies where very spongy to the touch and robust in structure. One of the University Groundskeepers also gave me a pointer on another location further a field on campus to discover "field mushrooms" (bit boring) while he was painting out his lime. Still he meant well . maybe I'll trek down there sometime and take a photo

Apologies about the darkness of the photo's these examples were quite shaded.

Matt | Very interesting Thanks for sharing
The caps of these specimens look slightly different to those I've observed (mostly in the edges which look soft not rounded) . And the fact they are growing in a troop (group) Bravo! excellent photo!!!
Edit: I understand that phenotypical variation in this genotype is heterozygous (not homogeneous) in character (I'm a newbie). And a few of the draker capped photos I've taken do look like this in retrospect.
Yours is a really nice find in my eyes MattPrince and Wife Did the very base of the stipes (stalks) turn almost neon blue/green on slicing (or upon gnat larvae invasion)? , Did the inner cap (top) turn salmon pink prior to discolouring slate grey? These aspects alongside the presence of Poplar have been consistent definitive and conclusive for me.
utube 'slate bolete' or 'Leccinum duriusculum' for time-lapse photography

| | | Re: Leccinum duriusculum / Slate Bolete ? Help please I don't remember any strong transitional pink, but yes lexy lurid blue green around the edges of the stipe bottom and then most of the upper stipe and cap changed to dark grey over 10 minutes or so.
Cheers,

Next season, look closer and observe the salmon pink colouration in the top of the stipe and cap when first sliced , just prior to them turning grey colouration with slated lines after 20mins or more Leccinum durisculum 2 - YouTube

| | | Re: Leccinum duriusculum / Slate Bolete ? Help please Funny you say that Neil. Since Halloween, not a single Slate Bolete has been seen.
It appears that this variety prefers periods of drought, hence its listing as a 'summer bolete'
peace out
