White truffle ?

Hi chaps .... this was found on a path on some sandy heathland with a scattering of pine trees ... is it too poor a photograph ?

Odds are, this will turn out to be the earth ball, Scleroderma citrinum, but the proof of the pudding (is in the ingredients), that's why we need to see inside.

Should really have done that in the first place but didn't want to destroy my treasure, however even I can see that it doesn't look 'right' and has an unpleasant aroma ! - oh well better luck next time (I thought I had a valuable dog for a moment) Regards and thanks to Mal and Neil ... Roger

Neil was quite correct - it certainly looks like a Scleroderma; it's immature but S. citrinum is by far the most likely candidate

btw white truffles don't occur in the UK
