Anyway, here goes: (and I'm rushing this)
First 4 photos - I agree, A.excelsa var. spissa.
Next 2 (brown ones), Amanita fulva.
Next 4 - Pluteus sp. (I can't decide what colour the cap is)
Next 3 - Xerula radicata (Rooting Shank) This would have a long 'tap root' in the ground.
Next 1 - Not Shaggy Ink Cap, but a type of Ink Cap, yes.
Next 1 - Most likely Bay Boletus.
Yes with Sulphur Tuft.
And finally - Oi h'aint got a clue gal.
And goodnight, sleep tight.

Regarding my suggestion of Bay Bolete, and you saying there were plenty of Beech around, makes me slightly cautious now, especially in view of the fact I was unable to see the cap colour from which it gets the common name, or any markings on the stalk - but despite these circumstances, Bay Bolete remains my No 1 guess.

I think the Bolete is most likely to be either Xerocomus cisalpinus or X. chrysenteron both of which can favour Beech, especially the former. X. chrysenteron is also known to associate with conifer. This doesn't look like X. badius to me, the stem coloration is wrong.

| | | Re: Huge selection of finds today! In thetford forrest! After picking up my motorbike from Harleston this morning, I decided to go to Thetford to have a wander round and then into the forest to see what is about (given the incentive by Violet Bugs finds).
I stayed in the deciduous trees (mostly Beech) by the roadsides and saw nothing, so I headed for Brandon Country Park which is usually quite productive and saw nothing. Grrrrr... !
So I headed for Santon Downham, hoping to see Nick Cantle (Hi Ya Nick !) with an early Cortinarius in his hand and studying it seriously with a hand lens, but no Nick and no dammed fungi either - everywhere is just so dry.
So I goes to the river bridge, parks me bike, take a walk along the riverpath, loads of Banded Demoiselle, but not a dickie fungi anywhere !
Next I go over the level crossing to walk over the reclaimed heathland and finally see 3 tiny shrivelled up toadstools - too shrivelled up to ID.
So what part of Thetford Forest did you go to Violet ?

An area that was very rich in fungi the other day turned up practically nothing yesterday. Just the way it is I think. |

Hopefully yesterday's rain will produce something interesting today!
Regards

Neil. | Well Neil your near where i was on Monday Santon Downham woods if you cross that bridge across the water you will come across St Helens picnic site. If you do the orange walk for 5 mins its around there i can't explain exactly where :P
I never seen Nick but im sure will come across soon enough, St helens for me has always been dry for mushrooms but this Monday i was amazed at the quanity one part the floor was covered in sulphur tuft.
There are alot of areas which are very dry, im still hoping to find a boletus eduilus one day!
Goooood luck Neil finding some fungi ! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
