| | | Re: Common Names for Fungi How long have Natural England been doing this for then ? (I can only assume NE are behind this as their logo is displayed)
Could this be seen as a snub to the team that came up with the previous new common names, remembering that some didn't go down well at all ?
'Let the people decide' is more democratic, but how many people have seen the web site ?
In this respect it's a case of WAB to the rescue.
But at the end of the day are we going to have one common name for England and another for Scotland and if it (the Bolete) has only been found so far in Scotland who are the English to give it a common name ?

Neil. | It was first found 5 years ago in Berks.

| | | Re: Common Names for Fungi Isn't this really about getting the public at large more interested in nature.
Which in it's wider context is the real issue here, not the misspelling by a journo.

| | | Re: Common Names for Fungi Just seen this on the BBC News website.... BBC News - Swindon girl Rachael Blackman christens fungus 'hotlips'
" A lurid orange fungus has been officially christened "hotlips" by a 12-year-old girl from Swindon.
Rachael Blackman beat more than 5,000 entries in a competition to find a moniker for 10 endangered or overlooked species lacking a common name.
Judges said Rachael's name perfectly captured the appearance of the vivid orange fungus.
The name hotlips will now enter the English language alongside the fungus's Latin name, Octospora humosa."
Remembering Chris's liking for common names for fungi, I can't wait for the day when he posts on here that he has found Hotlips in his moss patch....

though to be fair I have, on forays for the general public, been known to relent and call Daldinia concentrica King Alfred's Balls
