Another shot from my trip to Scotland this weekend. This specimen was found in a very dark, damp pine forest where there were huge clusters of them growing amongst the carpet of fallen needles.

These were tiny fungi, with caps no more than 1.5cm in diameter but in some cases half that size. The stem were long and delicate. I was surprised at the detail of the cap when I checked my photos later on that evening. Such beauty goes mostly unnoticed on the forest floor.





I'd love to put a name to these.

the big ones are a Mycena species - microscopy to take it much further methinks . . .

much more interesting some of the pine needles show evidence of a Lophodermium
