Is this fungi growing on my tree?

Hi,

My first post so I hope I have got this in the right place! But I seem to have something growing up my tree in the garden. Can anyone please tell me what it is and if it is Fungi and if so will it harm my tree?

Hi Pete and welcome to WAB

These are scale insects and not a fungus. Most trees can tolerate quite heavy scale infestations without harm.

At a later stage a very small 'black sooty' fungus can develop but this is relatively harmless too.

These are Scale insects. They may or may not harm your tree,but are certainly sucking lots of sap from it and producing lots of sticky "honeydew". These are females, males are very tiny and seldom seen.
