when it comes to the ascomycetes popular books, quite understandably, generally include only a smattering of the more striking, larger ones

I have looked at other spores and the "coalescing" is not common on most of them so I think I will record S subhirtella

It took a couple of attempts but a stack of 8 gave this result which was very close to what I could see through the scope, which as you say does not always happen.
