| | | Re: [ID] Amanita Hello Chris,
I'm a little rusty, but to me I'd say this is the very poisonous Panther Cap, Amanita pantherina. There seems to be a 'distinctive girdle' at the stem base of the left specimen in the photo and you have very obvious white dots on the cap with no signs at all of any blushing.
Blushers are out though, I saw my first of the year under Birch last Thursday.
Neil.
PS. Don't forget to give as much detail as possible to have the best chance of an ID. In this case, telling us what trees were growing nearest the fungus would have been very useful. Also, in this case the smell, if any, would be very relevant.

| | | Re: [ID] Amanita It doesn't look like The Blusher to me. No reddening of the stem, gills or cap.
I would say it's more like a Panther Cap.
Charlie.

| | | Re: [ID] Amanita Cheers both, thanks for the id.
I will go back and take another look at it today and collect the up rooted one, give it a good looking over...i was rushing through with this, as i was only checking the area for Malacolimax tenellus and other slugs.
P.s...yes sorry Neil, i should have known to put as much info as i had (though, very little). I also thought i put the tree it was growing under, but that was on the info about the photo.

Ken | I was originally going to say "and the spots on the cap don't seem grey enough for A.excelsa" - that's because I had noticed the spots became more greyish towards the centre, but overall I built up the impression they were more white than grey.
Perhaps in the back of my mind I was 'wanting' this to be the Panther Cap just to show how easy it is to mistake an 'edible' species for one which is poisonous.
I'm not so sure about the stem being that 'clear cut' either, but having knowingly seen only one A.pantherina and only 2 or 3 A.excelsa
I'm unhappy to concede this is probably A.excelsa after all.

Ken | Cheers Ken.
Collected specimen yesterday and checked it through, it does have the characteristics (Rogers Mushrooms) of Amanita excelsa...

| | | Re: [ID] Amanita I should have checked my Phillips before suggesting A.pantherina.
Having now done so, I would also agree that this is probably A.excelsa.
Charlie.

Alright, I DO concede it is more likely to be A.excelsa (but only under duress M'Lord)
