| | | unknown large crown-shaped fungus growing on beech I took this picture on 17 September 2009 and have failed to properly identify it. The watch I used for scale is 18cms long so the fungus is around 45cms in diameter. It was growing on the exposed roots of a very large beech which was clearly dying and had several bracket fungi attached elsewhere. The fungus was crown-shaped, and soft, dry and firm to the touch |

| | | Re: unknown large crown-shaped fungus growing on beech It could be one of a number of red herrings, not having seen the underside, but I guess Trametes versicolor. Meripilus giganteus is also a fair bet.

| | | Re: unknown large crown-shaped fungus growing on beech Thanks for the information guys. I've taken a look at some pictures of Meripilus Giganteus since your postings and some of them look very similar although the younger forms are rather different - rounder, plumper. Some of the older versions are closer but none of the pics I found show the distinctive crown shape. However, I can see that some of the larger specimens might grow up to look like my picture!
