Hi all,

I suspect that this may fall into the "needs microscopy" category, but I'll give it a try

These are growing in the doorway of the cowshed near our house at the moment.

Substrate - Cow manure + straw

Size;

Cap - (max) 25mm wide x 30mm high
Stipe 5mm x 70mm





Young fruit bodies v. scaly becoming smooth with clear striations with age. Deliquescent within 24 hours.

I'm wondering about C. macrocephalus but expect my ignorance to be exposed

Hi Steve,

For what my opinion is worth, the photos along with your description of the initially scaly cap becoming smooth, plus straw/manure substrate & fruiting at this time of year seem to match pretty well with Coprinus cinereus

I'm sure you're right. For some reason I had C. cinereus down as a grassland species (similar habitat to C. comatus)
