| | | Unidentified bracket fungus found on Oak - ID please? Found this glorious bracket fungus growing out of an oak tree. No idea what it is. Can anyone help? Can't get the picture to upload from the library, so have to give a link to the image library: Fungus_unknown - Wild About Britain Pics
Regards

Yes, the photo is very impressive, but surely you must have at least one fungus book somewhere and with this being illustrated in almost EVERY fungus book, a little research could have quickly given you an answer.
Still, you've come to the right place and have obtained the right answer.

Neil. | Thanks, Fairplay - well, I looked through all the photos displayed on Wild About Britain and didn't find it. If not there, I asked, then where??
But thanks everyone for your help. I'm still not sure how common this is. I understand it is a saprophyte feeding on the heartwood of hardwood trees. I presume this would eventually lead to a hollow tree?- and I presume I can expect repeated production of these impressive fruiting bodies from the tree on which this one appears. |

not uncommon at all - see the huge thread Chicken Of The Woods. which you will note is still featuring around the top of the Fungus Forum; a lot of your questions should be answered if you peruse that
you will note that there is considerable discussion about edibility at the beginning of that thread - we tend to play that side of things down these days, see: Is my fungus edible or psychotic requests (though of course tbf you haven't mentioned that aspect at all)
best wishes
Chris
