Podgrzybek = Xerocomus
Rydz = Lactarius (possibly trominosus or deliciosus)
Kurki gryzb = (possibly) Cantharellus
Czubajka Kania = Parasol Mushroom
Prawdziwek = Boletus edulis

| | | Re: Polish Mushroom question There is definitely a strong tradition of mushroom foraging in Poland and this can be seen amongst the large swath of Polish immigrants that have made their way to the UK in the last few years. My friends girlfriend is from Poland and she was telling me recently how she and her friends used to go foraging as kids and take them home for their mothers to cook.
Last Autumn when I was out foraging and recording I was often aware of large numbers of Polish people who seemed to be hoovering up the forest floor. It seems they are not so fussy about what they eat and maybe have built up a tolerance, over the generations, to certain mildly poisonous fungi. I only say this because of the amount of fungi I see many of them dragging around in black bin bags last year.
It would be very interesting to go foraging with an old Polish woman who had been gathering fungi most of her life. I'm sure a woman like that would be a wealth of knowledge. |

| | | Re: Polish Mushroom question Hmm.... I wouldn't be too sure Wayne, the fact an old lady may still be alive is no guarantee that the mushrooms she says are safe to eat are indeed so.

| | | Re: Polish Mushroom question I see what you mean Wayne seems alot of Polish people have stories to tell being young or old. I think the old Polish woman would know some deep info of fungi, my friend is so passionate about mushrooms like the italians are about there tommatos and the pasta there mamma used to make ! lol
They must of built up a tolerance all them generations of fungi eating must be in the genes id say!
