| | | Re: Morel mushroom hunt in Thetford forrest? I have been to most of the Picnic spots around Thetford Forest and I can tell you straight up that 99% of them are the completely wrong habitat. They're mostly Pine and very sandy soil. You want to be heading towards the Ash trees.
Have fun and good luck (you'll need it ) |

| | | Re: Morel mushroom hunt in Thetford forrest? Asking for the locations of the elusive Morel is rather like asking a Cockerel to lay an egg It aint going to happen
Good luck searching though.

| | | Re: Morel mushroom hunt in Thetford forrest? As you will have found, large parts of Thetford and many of the more popular picnic sites are acid sand. There are pockets of loams and sand over chalk and limestone here and there, where esculenta and elata have been found. It's difficult to find a particular species on new ground after two months without rain. |

| | | Re: Morel mushroom hunt in Thetford forrest? No worries Violet. Morels grow in a variety of different habitats. My local (small) patch of esculenta's grow in a wood around mainly Oak, Ash, Hazel and Hornbeam, with some Sycamore. The ground flora is predominately Ivy, (Hedera) Lesser Celandine, Ground Ivy and Bluebells. The soil is neutral to alkaline.
If you search previous threads and posts on Morels, you will find plenty of other info on habitat etcetera.
Hope this helps, but I fear the Morels are finished for this year, mainly due to the exceptionally dry weather.
Charlie
