Has anyone any idea what this is? I'm assuming it is a fungus although I'm not 100% certain even of that! |

I'm assuming it is a fungus although I'm not 100% certain even of that! | there looks to be the ascomycete anamorph ('coelomycete') Coniothyrium equiseti around the nodes on that dead stem (I like dead Equisetum stems, they have some interesting micro-fungi on them . . . . ) - but I don't think that's what you quite meant

Thanks guys - I had no idea about this "living fossil" Class of plants before now. Fascinating!
@Chris - you mean those grey streaks? Next time I'll look closer - mind you I only had a tiny compact camera with me this time; I'd need to have the DSLR & macro lens to get a decent shot of the coelomycete. I'd never thought of even trying to photograph that sort of thing but I will now...  | | |
