| | St Georges Mushrooms. En route to search for the elusive Morel yesterday, I decided to go via one of my favorite Calocybe sites and was rewarded with the first of this years buttons.
They're nice and early this year and it's looking good for the rest of the spring, but we could really do with a good few hours of steady rain in this part of the Kingdom.
Charlie.

| | | Re: St Georges Mushrooms. hi charlie,
i found my first 2011 specimens in sheep pasture near Sapperton Tunnel, Cirencester, GLOS on sunday 3rd april.
early for this regular site and many more will spring up shortly no doubt.
hoping to get to previous morchella sites again soon but as you say, they are more elusive.

| | | Re: St Georges Mushrooms. Hey guy's great finds, I've been searching for morels, and apart from a handfull in a flowerbed last week all im finding is st George's mushrooms which are popping up everywhere (swansea). In your own experience and opinion how would you describe the smell of St Georges mushroom? |

| | | Re: St Georges Mushrooms. hi Fro-in-shorts.
can i repeat the accurate (in my view) thoughts of many a noted author/mycophile by echoing that they smell GAMEY.
STRONG is another adjective id use to describe the gambosa smell etc
i suppose you could say Horse Mushrooms (to pick another common species entirely at random!) are also fairly nostril-busting.
with them and other spp however, the scent is more "regular mushroomy" - sweeter and more floral than the distinctive, meatier St Georges aroma.
just an opinion!

| | | Re: St Georges Mushrooms. Just found my first ever St Georges mushrooms! My mushroom interest died down over winter along with the mushrooms but this has got me excited again!
I went home, immediately fell asleep and dreamt about finding a load of massive Ceps (and about killing hundreds of zombies but that's irrelevant I suppose!).
