| | | Unidentified fungus from Sherwood Pines Hello all
We found this growing on a footpath at Sherwood Pines (3rd April 2011) in the vicinity of the Helvella leucomelaena. The image below is approximately 12mm wide. The largest 'group' we saw was about 34mm
It first appeared to be unattached to anything and just laying on the sandy soil. but on closer inspection:
Any help, comments appreciated

John, John and Les | Have you actually seen hyphae under the microscope?
( edit) or something looking like strings of beads?

best regards,
Andreas | as you can see above Andreas, that was my suspicion - I have never come across it this young and therefore this regular, so I was being a little cautious
am I being naughty in pointing out that Nostoc isn't an alga?
best wishes
Chris

In fact, they are Cyanobacteria. Today - but not long time ago, the term "Blaualgen" (= "Blue algae") was used at least in Germany. And as the people not spezialised in those organism have a better identification with Nostoc and the term "Blaualge" then with "Cyanobacterium" it is still widely used - though it's not correct of course.
best regards,
Andreas
