| | | Mycena silvae-nigrae Found a group of these yesterday, growing from a coniferous stump. As there has been very little around recently they were #1 in a queue of 1 waiting for id .... Mycena silvae-nigrae, which seems to have very few records, and this a second for VC62 I think (the first was from me last year in June, same compartment but different tree stump) .
Rather large spores, amyloid, 12.6-16.6 x 7.3-9.6um, Qav 1.7. Mainly clavate cheilocystidia, a few with a tip or two. 2-spored basidia. And caterpillar like caulocystidia. Spores in melzers cheilocystidia Basidia 2 spored Caulocystidia
And some old friends have reappeared. Prolific all summer and autumn and right through until the snow, and when the 6 weeks of snow cover finally melted, it was obvious they had been growing under the snow, with small caps but very strong stout stipes. Then they went quiet during Feb and March, but a night of heavy rain a few days ago has prompted them to spring into action again. Psathyrella
I hope the Forestry Commission will make a few more woodchip piles as very soon these things (along with a whole host of other fungi) will have eaten away all the piles ...

| | | Re: Mycena silvae-nigrae I would have said the chielocystidia is more in line with M abramsii but as every thing else fits with M silvae-nigrae I would say you are right.

Mal | Thanks Mal.
The cheilocystidia were a bit more clavate as a group in these than the ones I found in June, but were still very similar, and they were identical in other microscopic respects so that I was happy about that. With the help of Aronsen's Norway Mycena website that is .
For comparison, these were the cheilo from June specimens:
Cheers

Melanie | errrm don't forget that most records of " Mycena alcalina sensu Dennis, Orton & Hora" were probably M. silvae-nigrae . . . .
and then see: NBN Gateway: Mycena alcalina grid map
