The tree looks like Beech and the grey appearance of the fungus points towards this being Bjerkandera adusta (Smokey Bracket) which is quite common on this host.

Neil. | On the basis of what one can see here I fully concur with Neil's suggestion

| | | Re: Unidentified tree fungus I am not sure if it is on a beech. There is a beech to the right of it, but the wood looks a bit too grooved. However it seems to grow on other host trees. It is in the local nature reserve. Another question - is Smokey Bracket used in medicine? |

why? - please don't start doing anything silly now . . .

| | | Re: Unidentified tree fungus Hello again Alison,
I'm none too sure where WAB policy stands on this - you may know it is against rules to discuss hallucinogenic fungi, as it is to discuss the edible qualities of fungi to a certain degree.
To identify fungi so that you may then go on to 'test it' in an unknown manner for an unknown purpose lies somewhere between these 2 parameters.
Can you tell us more, i.e. is this part of a course with an accepted organisation or is this just a personal interest ?
You can be sure many or most of the more common fungi have been tested for various properties many times over, so what is it exactly you hope to learn ?
