| | | Growing on Angelica Stems A job for Chris I think, found these tiny black discs (<0.5mm diameter) on dead Angelica stems at Malham Tarn today.
They seem to be infertile so no spores to show you and microscopically not very much else to go on.
Any ideas, as ever, much appreciated.
ps just found this on ASCOFrance could it be - Heterosphaeria patella?

ps just found this on ASCOFrance could it be - Heterosphaeria patella? | I didn't even get to the bottom line before spotting what this is - honest! Heterosphaeria patella indeed it is; good stands of Angelica are rarely without it in spring - at least round here
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Growing on Angelica Stems Hello,
yes, same with me. Also was sure during the loading of the image that it is Heterosphaeria patella.
What is probably interesting to those who are interested in nomenclature:
Peziza chailletii Persoon is Heterosphaeria patella var. alpestris. This was identified by LEUCHTMANN, who made a monograph about Heterosphaeria in the 80s. Unfortunately Pyrenopeziza chailletii (Pers.) Fuckel - based on Peziza chailletii Pers. - is the type species of Pyrenopeziza Fuckel. But as Heterosphaeria Fries is the older genus, Pyrenopeziza is at the moment a synonym to Heterosphaeria. Nobody seems to have recognized that up to now, also LEUCHTMANN didn't note that. I'm sitting over a proposal to conserve the genus Pyrenopeziza with another type species, to avoid that for all Pyrenopeziza a new genus name has to sought. So, if all works well and I have time to finish my proposal one day, we have the chance that nothing changes ....
best regards,
Andreas
