This is a puzzle, but I suspect one of the fungi experts can help.
The remaining brown spore mass is reminiscent of Puffballs or earthstars, but the stem is tallish - the stem is also a bit of helvella or maybe dog stinkhorn, but could well be a Morel - when did you take this? (clearly not summer).
Just hedging my bets, thought I'd put my head above the parapet on this to start the ball rolling...........................

These are the typical remains of Handkea utriformis.

| | | Re: Identification of Fungi Although utriformis is usually found in grass. With the length of the sterile base in the photo I would also think it is more likely to be exipuliformis. Perhaps there are some trees nearby and out of shot. And yes it has now moved back to Lycoperdon.
