| | | Stereum gausapatum Found this in Northaw Great Wood today, thought it was an early stage of Stereum hirsutum. Looking it up I think more likely gausapatum especially as the wood is full of oak (Log a bit too old to ID).
Must remember to score one next time I see one and see if it turns red. Actually just seen that hirsutum turns red as well so is there a definitive way of telling the two apart at the crust stage?

| | | Re: Stereum gausapatum Hello Laura,
I think you mixed up some Stereums. Stereum hirsutum is never reddening. Perhaps you meant Stereum rugosum instead.
There are three bleeding species of Stereum:
Stereum sanguinolentum on coniferous wood only, Stereum rugosum (ubiquistic on decidous wood) and Stereum gausapatum (quite strictly confined to oak)
There is one yellowing species of Stereum:
Stereum subtomentosum on decidous wood (especially Fagus) and with a often nearly stipe-like point of attachement.
There are two non-bleeding, non-yellwoing Stereum:
Stereum hirsutum on decidous wood of all kind, with distinct orange colours
Stereum rameale on THIN decidous wood, with distinctly greyish colour (like S. sanguinolentum).
Your is in my opinion Stereum hirsutum, die to the vivid colours, which all others lack. Except may be Stereum subtomentosum, which can look like that. Then you should observe a coloration versus citron yellow in the whitish marginal zones when rubbing it.
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Stereum gausapatum Thanks for all the info Andreas,
Looks like my initial guess was right. I was just looking at the Stereum hirsutum in the A-Z to check if there were any pics like mine and got distracted by a pic of gausapatum that looked similar.
By the way the A-Z listing says that hirsutum reddens when cut - does that need changing?
Was planning to try and get my brackets and crusts sorted out better this year not off to a very good start!
Laura
